The 2010 Top 5 Trip-Hop Trendsetters

OK, so instead of writing a typical top 10 list of 2009;  I figured I'd select/ foretell the top 5 Trip-Hop/ Downtempo trendsetting and ground-breaking artists of 2010.  I swear that the 5 artists listed below will give us all something to look forward to for the next year.  I put some long hard thought into it, and I derived this list based on the fact that  these musicians like to give us something to talk about. Whether they're controversial, ground-breaking, or making a comeback- these Trendsetters are going to set the pace for all other trip-hop contenders.

First and foremost We all must tip our hat off to our beautiful blonde brit, Alice Russell.
She just released a music video for the single Let Us Be Loving of her latest album "Pot Of Gold"
It's not very often that Alice puts out music videos for her singles. I've only seen two; Hurry On Now, and Let Us Be Loving.
I didn't really care for Hurry On Now as a video.  However, I am totally sprung on the song, and love it to death; I just think whoever directed the video was in a rush or something.  The video could've been sweet, because the synopsis and basic idea was just as endearing as the lyrics. For her latest video, Let Us Be Loving, I think that she realized that video killed the radio star.

Here's a slideshow of her on stage live at the Big Chill 2009, where she performed along side Emiliana Torrini, & Lamb, just to name a few....
Her song, lyrics, and voice are phenomenal!

I can't wait for her new music video, Turn & Run, to hit the WorldWideWeb!

It shouldn't be any surprise to anyone that  I still think of   Zero 7 as a heavy-hitter and trip-hop trendsetter.
Since the release of Yeah Ghost in September '09, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker have received bad reveiews all around from critics like http://www.musicomh.com/albums/zero-7-3_0809.htm .  However I haven't given up on their creative abilities yet.

I was invited to download this song for free on myspace and I fell in love with it immediately.  "Swing"  sang by Binki Shapiro, on Yeah Ghost has the same fantastic, dreamy inducing feeling that we normally expect from Zero 7.
This is a live performance of "Swing".
Sam & Henry's next album is a guaranteed success, because this one received horrible reviews.  I guess people don't think they put enough effort into it.  And I guess I agree since I could only identify with one track.

And Let's not forget the forefathers: Portishead who have been so busy collaborating with Massive Attack on Heligoland, and still had time to record for Amnesty International...
This track is definitely a different musical approach for Portishead, but Beth's vocals somehow pulls it off.  The single is only 99 cents to download, and it benefits International Human Rights...
You can't beat that right???!!!!!!

Download Chase the Tear NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sneaker Pimps founding member,  Chris Corner aka I AM X, has been whipping up all sorts of dark, mysterious music that will make you go bump in the night.  His latest single with Imogen Heap, My Secret Friend,
was released in October '09 is available on his website, Boutique IAMX
.
http://www.boutiqueiamx.eu/

This single is off of IAMX's third studio album, Kingdom of Welcome Addiction. The music video is a total trip as well.  In a recent interview with IAMX  he described Kingdom of Welcome Addiction as being "like Disney World but with lipstick, cynicism and wit". postwave.gr interview with IAMX.

I really shouldn't even need to list number one! We all know Massive Attack is doing nothing BUT trendsetting. Especially with there very anticipated album, Heligoland that is going to be released in less than 6 weeks.  The whole underground, electronic, trip-hop world is going to have a field day.

The Queen Of Trip-Hop is "Keeping Secrets"

What is up with Skye Edwards second solo album, "Keeping Secrets"?
Is Skye trying to keep her new album a secret on purpose??
Her MYSPACE (http://www.myspace.com/myskyesite) says."Go to the top and throw them down one by one", & I have no insight to tell you WTF that means.
Anyways,  It was released in the Fall of '09 and still can't be found in many stores.  The only place where you can buy the album that I know is on Itunes (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/keeping-secrets/id335944397).

She started writing songs for the album with Steve Gordon at the start of her 2006 Mind How You Go tour.  Apparently, Skye's previous record label, Karova went out of business, so she  released the album under her own label, Skyewards.

The tracklist has collaborations by many talented, such as Daniel Lanois, the former U2 producer; and Ivor Guest who produced the latest Grace Jones album.
Track list:

01-I Believe (4:51)
02-Boo Hoo (5:04)
03-Not Broken (4:39)
04-The Shape I'm In (3:36)
05-Monsters Demons (5:50)
06-Clock To Stop (3:54)
07-Almost Killed Me (3:54)
08-Wrong Alright (4:02)
09-Maybe To Spain (4:34)
10-Exhale (4:49)

Here is the music video for her latest single called "I Believe" that was directed by Fatima and produced by Veronica Saez @ Annex Films.

Despite the reviews that I've read so far, I think that Skye's music video for her latest single is quite authentic, fresh, and emotionally charged (like usual) .  Not to mention chill and sultry as ever.
But, does anyone know why she isn't being represented by a label? I think that its a personal choice that she's made.  I also think that Skye Edwards is a Heavy Hitter, and Legend in the Trip-Hop genre.   I Believe in you Skye.
